It is a progestin synthetic form which has an effect identical to progesterone, the female hormone. It is used to treat menstrual irregularities caused by hormonal imbalances, as well as irregular vaginal bleeding in women. In order to avoid unwanted pregnancies, it is sometimes used for birth control.
